Andy Walmsley told us his story about the night of the flood and how it affected the community and his relationship to rain. He’s a commercial artist and filmmaker living in Churchtown who made a film about the floods as part of the flood action scheme’s campaign to raise money to construct the defence. Watch it below.
This is the fifth episode in a series telling the stories of members of the Churchtown flood defence group. Churchtown is a village in Lancashire which was flooded from river overflow twice in the space of 8 months in 2015 and 2016.

“It was that weird feeling you got as a kid going to sleep on Christmas Eve but instead of waking up with excitement you were waking up with dread.”
“We were thinking...we’ve had it because it’s going to fill the house...and then it was coming up the back field, so I’m thinking we’re going to get [flooded] both ways...
The power went off in the village and it was so eerie. It was deadly quiet and all you could see was water everywhere.”
“A bit of carpet isn’t the big deal. The fear and the worry you have with it is the big deal. I’m probably a bit more laid back now, but I was super anxious for a long time. Every time it rained I was thinking, do I stay home, do I go. It’s always on your mind, that’s why a lot of people did move out. Your mental health and thinking your going to go under water, it’s not an easy fix that.”
